A Monday off—the chance to relax, head out of town for a long weekend, or finally catch up on those house projects—Labor Day is always a welcome break.

As the U.S. Department of Labor explains, Labor Day is “an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.”

In June 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September as a national holiday. Labor Day now marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of fall and the holiday season.

Here are 5 fun ways to enjoy the long weekend:

  1. Gourmet Hot Dog Bar
Add toppings like bacon, sauerkraut, nacho cheese, jalapeños, grilled onions, and avocado to your picnic spread and let your guests create their ultimate hot dog. What is your favorite combo?

  2. Do Something You Never Have Time For
Want to hike Mount Baldy? Craving a slow morning bike ride? Thinking of rearranging your living room? Take advantage of the day off and do something for you.

  3. Hit the Beach
Fair warning—it’ll be busy! But with a good book, some snacks, and an umbrella, it’s a classic way to send off summer.

  4. Backyard Movie Night
Set up a projector, grab some popcorn, and enjoy a movie under the stars. Suggestions: Captain AmericaNational TreasureRemember the Titans, or a marathon of The Office.

  5. Cookie Skillet Sundaes
Ever tried baking chocolate chip cookies on the BBQ? Use a cast iron pan, press in your cookie dough, bake it up, and top with vanilla ice cream for the perfect Labor Day treat.

How are you celebrating your Labor Day?

Wishing you a fun, safe, and restful holiday!
