Downpayment Assistance Programs in California

California is a difficult state to purchase a home in. Owning a home is the American Dream, but what do you do when it feels out of reach?

There are many programs — Statewise, Regional, and at the City level — to assist first time home buyers and underprivileged groups.

Downpayment Assistance Programs in California range from grants, zero percent loans, and other structures.

California Association of REALTORS Housing Affordability Fund (HAF)

The California Association of REALTORS Housing Affordability Fund (HAF) helps with closing cost assistance. It is a grant program that you have to apply for.

The application is online and must be submitted no later than 3 weeks before the close of escrow.

According to the Neighborhood Partnership Housing Services, Inc. website: “The program helps first-time homebuyers bridge the affordability gap by providing them with up to $10,000 in closing cost assistance. Each grant is provided to low-to-moderate income (120% AMI and below) first-time homebuyers who utilize the services of a CA REALTOR®. Household income (income from all household members regardless of if they are on the loan or not) is used to determine eligibility.”
