How to Get Your California Real Estate License

Are you considering getting a California real estate license?

The California Department of Real Estate grants licenses. There are two types of real estate licenses a person can apply for: Salesperson and Broker.

The DRE is a great resource for learning the current processing times and information for examinees.

You must pass a written examination to get your license and there are requirements to take the exam.

5 Things to Keep In Mind When Getting Your California Real Estate License

1. Cost

There is a cost to purchasing your real estate courses, signing up for a crash course, and applying for the state exam. Once you pass the real estate exam, you will pay a license fee.

2. Time

Each course requires a minimum number of hours to study so be prepared to study for a few months, take an all day crash course, and all day real estate exam.

3. Studying

If you have not been in school for a decade or so, then you may forget what it is like to study, prepare for practice tests, and cram for a big exam. Real estate courses require focused mental energy to learn the material properly.

4. Classes – Online or In Person

You can take real estate courses online or in-person. Some community colleges and State Universities offer the required course work. Register for online courses here! The Department of Real Estate lists the approved real estate correspondence schools

5. Brokerage

The brokerage you land at has a huge impact on your first year of real estate. What are some questions that new licensees should ask themselves when they are interviewing at brokerages? Check out our blog post here

After You Get Your Real Estate License

After you get your real estate license, celebrate! You passed the California real estate license exam and submitted your application to the state: that is an accomplishment!

Under California state law, with a Salesperson Real Estate License, you must hang your license under a broker to practice real estate.
